《His Wind Beneath My Wings》作者利昂內爾·史密斯（Lionel Smith）藉著分享自身飛行經驗向讀者傳遞那些「被視為常識」的資訊，讓讀者認識飛行的世界，並從中學習如何成為一名更安全飛行員（Become a safer pilot）。
I hope to pass on information in this book that will enable pilots to better understand and manage a light aircraft in situations other than what would be considered “normal” in general aviation standards.

He explains aviation terms, so it’s a great book for non-pilots, as well as pilots. I recommend it!
A Pilot is Born
在首章〈A Pilot is Born〉中，史密斯分段描述各個階段中的經歷以及他的心得，每寫完一段自己的經驗，他都會再寫一段自己從中的體悟，如果自己沒做好會怎樣？從正面來看待這次事件學習到什麼？
我認為這是值得學習的模式，遇到事情不管是否親身參與，我們可以透過事後回放、檢視、並從中學習，這樣即使並非當事人也能從中學到東西並參考。
史密斯首次對飛行的接觸源自於擔任技師的老爸，學飛的過程中，史密斯初期向一位二戰時期的戰鬥機駕駛John Surgeon學飛，於1963年取得商用飛行執照，接著在1966年開始擔任飛行教練一職，累積飛行時數超過8000小時。
在飛行的過程中，人會犯下許多錯誤，有時是靠著紮實的基礎化險為夷，有時候是靠運氣，作者分享自己的建議，他說最好是從自己與他人的錯誤中學習，讓自己成為經驗豐富的飛行員，避免用運氣去解決事情。

飛行員有兩個袋子，一個裝經驗，一個裝運氣。
開始飛行時，裝經驗的袋子是空的，另一個則裝著滿滿的運氣，技巧在於要趁著運氣用完前趕快裝越多經驗越好。
追求安全飛行的大方向是抱著追求專業知識、累積經驗、對自己有信心、不過度自負，我覺得這些道理不僅僅是用在航空領域，更可以用在各行各業中。

我喜歡作者會在這本書寫下許多有趣的句子，透過這些簡單的句子，讀者都可以從中反覆體會前人的智慧。
例如：
Never let an aircraft take you somewhere your brain didn’t get to five minutes earlier.
永遠別讓飛機的動態脫離大腦的掌控。
又或是：
A good landing is one from which you can walk away. A great landing is one after which they can use the plane again.
